Biographical Sketch:
Silva Arslanian, M.D., is the Richard L. Day Endowed Professor of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Pediatric Clinical and Translational Research Center at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, the Director of the Weight Management & Wellness Center, in addition to being the principal investigator of the NIH-funded Diabetes Fellowship Training (T32) and Pediatric Diabetes Scholars Program (K12), Dr. Arslanian obtained her medical degree from the American University of Beirut and completed her pediatric residency training at the same institution. She completed her fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at the ChildrenÂ’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. Arslanian is funded by NIH, Research Foundations and Pharmaceutical Companies. Her research focus is the investigation of the pathophysiology of insulin resistance during childhood growth and development, the metabolic syndrome, racial differences in insulin sensitivity and secretion, obesity and Type 2 diabetes in childhood. She is the Pittsburgh PI of a multicenter NIH-funded trial for TODAY (Treatment Options of type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth). She is a member of the NCRR CTSA Consortium Child Health Oversight Committee (CC-CHOC), and serves as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), International Study of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD), International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the European Medicines Agency (EMEA), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Dutch Medicines for Children Research Network (MCRN), and several pharmaceutical companies. She serves as an editor, referee, and reviewer for many journals. Dr. Arslanian has been an invited lecturer, symposium speaker, and chairperson at various international congresses and symposia in addition to being the recipient of several awards.
