Translational Research Workshop Bench to Bedside, and Bedside to Bench

Program: Pre-Conference Events
Session
Wednesday, March 4, 2015: 12:00 PM-5:00 PM
**This session is NOT eligible for CME credit**

Registration is required for this session:

The Translational Research Workshop provides attendees, especially early career researchers, with practical knowledge and tools for establishing translational research projects. This year, the Workshop will focus on helping basic scientists and clinical scientists overcome communication barriers to form collaborations to facilitate bidirectional translational research. Attendees will actively participate in small group discussions examining common barriers to the conduct of translational science, emphasizing both “bench to bedside” and “bedside to bench” directions. Expert faculty will discuss strategies for overcoming barriers and facilitating collaboration, while keynote speakers with basic and clinical backgrounds will describe how they set up successful teams. The program emphasizes open discussions engaging the speakers and attendees.

PROGRAM:

• Small-group discussions of case scenarios among attendees

• Panel discussion with expert faculty to examine issues identified during small-group discussions and share strategies to overcome obstacles in conducting translational science

• Keynote lectures with basic and clinical scientists describing how they set up successful teams and collaborate with counterparts in the clinic and at the bench

Welcome and Introduction

Program Moderator:  Aditi Bhargava, Ph.D.  University of California, San Francisco

12:20 PM – 1:35 PM

Breakout Discussions

Participants will work in small groups comprising basic and clinical scientists to discuss communication barriers in translational science.  Each group will be moderated by a discussion leader.  Case scenarios will be used to guide the discussion.

1:40PM – 3:00 PM

Panel Discussion

Discussion leaders will each present a synopsis of their small group discussion.  Panelists will take questions from the attendees.
